The customer who reviewed this play erred in saying the play with Frances MacDormand was a remake of the Grace Kelly - Bing Crosby - William Holden movie. The movie itself was a movie version of the play, originally starring Uta Hagen, who won an award for her performance. This play has appeared in New York several times. Grace Kelly's movie version was simply that -- the movie version. This seems to me important, in that Grace Kelly's performance was working against other performances, not inventing the character of Georgie. And the early days of her marriage are shown as prosperous and happy, which was in keeping with her elegant beauty and handsome clothes. Then we can see her after all that has ended. It's impossible not to like Grace Kelly, I think, and she did an admirable job for a woman with so little experience as an ordinary country girl. Her accent was a problem (Philadelphia-wealthy, American-Academy-of-Dramatic-Arts), but her ability to catch the camera -- even away from William Holden (no mean feat) -- was amazing. Additionally, I thought Bing Crosby was quite good, though I never thought of him as much of an actor. So, the movie was well worth seeing.

The Country Girl is being performed on Broadway for a limited run with some big name stars--Morgan Freeman, Peter Gallagher, and Frances McDormand. This is a re-make of a movie that starred Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby and William Powell.
Prior to seeing the live performance, I read this play. It is a simple story, but reading the written work before going to the show really enhanced the event for me. I was able to imagine Grace Kelly's work prior to seeing how Ms. McDormand interpreted the role now. Then I could contrast the performers, old vs. new. I even was able to get my paper copy of the play autographed by some of the cast members after the show. A real New York experience, and I would really recommend it!
