Having read many novels set in the regency era by several different authors, I expected to enjoy this book simply because of my interest in the period. I didn't necessarily expect to find a gem, however, and was pleasantly surprised by the high quality of writing in addition to the intricacies of the plot.

There were a couple of times I wondered when exactly the novel takes place, as there seemed to be a few discrepancies in the rules of propriety in the book versus in the regency (though the characters even recognized these apparent discrepancies, acknowledging their own deviations from the norm). Even so, it is evident that Julie Klassen has done substantial research and has endeavored to be thorough in presenting a truthful and clean portrayal. I was able to learn more about life in the Regency era through a difficult-to-put-down novel, without danger of stumbling upon material (of a morally questionable nature) I prefer not to read.

Klassen also delivers plausible characters with fresh, non-cliché dialogue (so often, characters do not communicate half of what they should, which is often the main source of their misunderstandings; Klassen's characters communicate, though ineffectively, which I find a more believable and less frustrating source of character-to-character misunderstandings).

Almost immediately after finishing this, I purchased 4 more of Klassen's books. I can't wait to read more.

Let me clarify that I do not like the 5 star system as it doesn't allow me to rate books as accurately as a 10 star system. Since I generally reserve 5 stars for fabulous books and 4 stars for really great books, there isn't a good rating for a book I really enjoyed but would not put in the must-read, amazing category. In a 10 star system, I would give this one a 6 or 7. I enjoy Julie Klassen books in general because of the fact that she is a fellow lover of Jane Austen, Jane Eyre and the Regency era in general. Her books are interesting and I like most of her protagonists, but they can sometimes be a little too predictable and are not always believable. There are some places where the language sounds jarringly modern and some unlikely situations, so I can't give them 4 or 5 stars in general, but if you're looking for a fun, easy read, these are enjoyable. She does do a lot of research and generally tries to be accurate, but she is still evolving and I sometimes find myself assessing the accuracy frequently rather than getting caught up in the story line. Having said that, however, out of the plethora of newly-born Regency era authors, she is one of the better ones.
I have loved all of Julie Klassen's books since I read The Silent Governess, but her most recent two releases didn't leave me with the great feeling that book did when I was done. They were still five stars - excellent - but the connection with the material didn't stir my heart as much as this book did. A lot of beauty existed in this story in the relationships between multiple characters - both primary and secondary.

My review is going to presume you have read the product description and know about the tutor's daughter Emma, and two male characters - Henry and Phillip. I won't spoil the book by launching into a discussion of the love interest, but I do want to say that it was really well-handled. This book takes place over a lengthy enough span of time that nothing felt forced or unrealistic. There was no "I hate you one minute and love you the next" in this plot. Instead emotions ebbed and flowed naturally.

Something of a surprise is the fact that this book took what could have been a more humane take on a concept presented within Jane Eyre and developed a character and side-story that really touched me and made the book feel like so much more than a typical "boy meets girl" Christian fiction novel. I like those sometimes, but it is always nice to feel elevated when closing the final page of a book, and that is how I felt when I finished The Tutor's Daughter. I don't think you will be disappointed if you read it.
I've been a fan of Klassen for a couple years. She's able to write Regency romance extremely well. Despite a slow start, The Tutor's Daughter fits right in with the style and sweetness of Klassen's previous novels.

Emma Smallwood and her father travel to Cornwall set to tutor the two younger brothers of students Mr. Smallwood once had at his school. They hardly get off on the right foot, arriving somewhat unexpectedly. Emma had been friends with Phillip Weston and tormented by his older brother Henry when they were boys at her father's school, and she's both anxious and nervous to see how living in the same home goes.

Right from the beginning, it's easy to tell there are a couple secrets being kept. Odd things keep happening and no one seems to have the right explanation for them. I will say I guessed one of the secrets early on, but it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the book.

The first third of the novel moved a little too slowly for my tastes, but the last third definitely helped make up for that. There's action and accusations and it's wonderful.

Klassen once again proves her fantastic ability to write a 19th century English romance. The language she uses is perfect, and she's able to paint the world as it was. The Tutor's Daughter has just the right amount of mystery and romance, plus it doesn't over do it when it comes to the religious discussions. I know this genre isn't for everyone, but for lovers of Regency romances, Klassen is an author to add to your bookshelves.
