This is the first story in this series (Take It Off), where I've really struggled with the plot. Granted, most of the tales are a bit fantastical - they skate on thin ice as regards plausibility - but with the previous ones I was able to ignore the little niggles about holes in the storyline; with "Tricks", there was just too much suspension of disbelief for me.Don't get me wrong - the hero, Tucker, was hot (hotter than all those who'd gone before him, in my humble opinion) and the heroine, Charlotte, was likeable enough, if way too sketchily drawn. But the notion that Tucker could pull off the role of substituting his deceased twin, from whom he was virtually estranged for years...nope, wasn't buying it. I really think Hebert could have scotched this significant plot flaw by not having the brothers be so emotionally distant. What would have been wrong with having Tucker and Max (his twin) as close siblings who at least kept in touch by phone, even if they hadn't seen each other for the past twelve to eighteen months? Or maybe something might have occurred to cause a rift just before Max started cohabiting with Charlotte, so Tucker was still relatively familiar with this twin's life, without being aware of the new girlfriend. That would have been way more credible to me. As it was, I couldn't believe he managed two hours of pretending to be his twin, let alone several days.
That aside, the intimate scenes were hot and the action rolled along at a steady pace with a few ridiculous, but entertaining, moments. And, of course, there was a neat HEA at the end that was entirely satisfying, as the reader has come to expect from this series.
Before wrapping this up, I have to say I struggled a bit with Charlotte - there was so little character development with her that it was hard to really understand some of her behaviour. Nevertheless, she was never irritating or unlikeable; more a mystery character, which isn't great given she is one of the story's protagonists.
Please don't get the impression that this was a terrible read - it wasn't. I boomerang terrible reads back so quickly the Amazon orders department probably gets whiplash. I didn't even consider returning this one - it was a hot, fun, quick read and Hebert has still done a sound job of providing written entertainment. Just make sure you have your tongue firmly lodged in your cheek whilst reading ;)

Tucker Patton fresh out of several years in the marine corps, is on his way to a new start, at a new job with his best friend. When he finds himself escorted to New York by the FBI to take on the role of his twin brother, Max. Who was helping investigate trouble within the company Max worked for, when he suddenly died. Tucker is in shock, he hasn't seen his brother in years and now he's gone. But Tucker is ready to take on the role and bring down the men who took his twin away. To find justice.
One thing Tucker sure wasn't expecting was to be living with a straight laced, no time for fun, lawyer, who happens to be his brothers girlfriend, Charlotte. Lies and secrets surround Tucker everywhere he looks. And he needs to bring these men down, and fast. Their looking for something, something that killed Max and could do the same to him and Charlotte. Tucker can't help but be completely drawn to Charlotte. And with the desire he feels for her and the danger lurking around every corner, Tucker knows, to keep Charlotte safe, she'll have to find out the truth.
Charlotte lives a calm and quite life, her and Max are safe, but lately she's felt less desire and more friendship from her boyfriend. Add that with the long hours and nights staying at work, she feels her and Max are drifting apart. So she's confused when all of a sudden Max is acting differently, dressing different and stirring something up inside of her that has been a sleep. Charlotte is in for a shock when she discovers the truth about the man she's been living with. Anger, pain and sadness hit her all at once, and the guilt she feels for the chemistry between her and Tucker.
Both Tucker and Charlotte feel maybe one night of passion, get it out of their system, and go there separate ways. But there's more between them then they thought. They both struggle with the guilt of haven found something special in the middle of a chaotic time. But together, fighting for justice, they lean on each other, Charlotte has to be okay and drop the guilt for wanting Tucker, and Tucker will fight to wrong the rights and keep Charlotte safe.
A lot of action and sexiness, Tricks is a fantastic, pull at your heart strings, fast paced, swoony romance. Tucker and Charlotte are one book couple, who's story you'll dive right into and not want to leave.
